Most first-time Umrah mistakes happen weeks before anyone reaches the Haram. A vaccine left until the last week. A permit skipped because the traveller assumed the visa covered it. A Rawdah slot nobody booked until they had already landed in Madinah, by which point the slots were gone. Errors inside the rituals are usually easier to fix, because someone nearby will correct you within seconds. An administrative error costs you a day of a short trip, and sometimes the trip itself. What follows is ordered the way your journey is ordered, with what to do instead.
Assuming the visa is enough
An Umrah permit issued through the Nusuk platform is required to perform Umrah, and no visa type replaces it. A tourist visa does let you perform Umrah, but you still have to issue the permit in the app before you go. Arriving in Makkah with only a visa means standing at a gate that asks for a code you do not have.
The visa itself has details people miss. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah introduced a multiple-entry Umrah visa valid for 365 days from issue, with a cumulative stay of up to 90 days across all visits, and it cannot be used to enter during the Hajj season, which runs from 1 Dhul Qadah to 13 Dhul Hijjah. Separately, in late 2025 the entry window on the single Umrah visa was cut from three months to one month after issue. Travellers who issued a visa early and then delayed the trip by two months have found it expired before they packed.
Permit issuance also pauses every year around Hajj. In 2026 it stopped from 18 April until the end of May and resumed in early June. If your dates sit anywhere near that window, check before you book flights rather than after. Visa types and conditions are covered in our Umrah visa guide, and the permit steps are in the Nusuk app guide.
Leaving the vaccination to the last week
Saudi Arabia requires everyone aged one year and older who arrives for Umrah to show proof of the quadrivalent ACWY meningococcal vaccine. The condition travellers overlook is timing: the dose has to be given at least ten days before travel, because protection is not complete before then. Proof is requested at the visa stage, and missing it is a common reason for a refusal or a delay.
Validity depends on the type. The conjugate vaccine covers around five years, the polysaccharide version around three. Someone who performed Umrah four years ago and assumed the old certificate still counted may find it does not. Check the date of your last dose before you pay for a ticket.
Crossing the miqat without ihram
This is the classic error for anyone arriving by air. The miqat is a place, not a time, and whoever passes it intending Umrah must already be in ihram. The difficulty is that the cabin announcement comes only minutes ahead, and you may be asleep or queuing for the lavatory when it does.
The fix is straightforward. Shower and put on the izar and rida at your departure airport or in the gate lounge, then make your intention when the announcement comes. Anyone who has already passed the miqat can go back and enter ihram there, or enter ihram where they are and owe a compensatory sacrifice according to the majority of scholars. Going back is easier than starting your Umrah with something nagging at you.
Recurring errors in tawaf and sai
Counting the laps
Safa to Marwah is one lap. Marwah to Safa is the second. Counting a round trip as a single lap leaves you doing fourteen and finishing at Safa instead of Marwah, and it is the most common practical error in the whole masaa. The rule that keeps you straight: sai begins at Safa and ends at Marwah.
Fighting the crowd at the Black Stone
Touching the Black Stone is a sunnah, not an obligation, and pushing for it harms other people and often yourself. Pointing towards it with your hand and saying the takbir as you pass is sufficient, and it is far safer if you are with elderly parents or children.
Assigned supplications for each lap
Booklets that assign a specific dua to each lap have no basis in the sunnah. Say what you want in the language you actually think in. The same goes for announcing the intention out loud in a memorised formula. Intention sits in the heart, and reciting it aloud only distracts you and the people around you.
Underestimating the walking and the heat
Safa and Marwah are about 450 metres apart, so sai alone comes to roughly three and a half kilometres. Add seven circuits of tawaf and five return walks between hotel and Haram, and a single day covers more ground than a normal week at home. Tawaf on the first floor is longer still, since each circuit follows a wider perimeter.
The heat will shape your schedule more than you expect. Average highs in Makkah in July sit between 42 and 43 degrees Celsius, and overnight lows stay near 29 or 30, which means midnight there feels like a warm summer afternoon in much of Europe. Plan the rituals for after fajr or after isha, drink before you feel thirsty, and wear shoes you have already broken in rather than a new pair bought for the trip. Our weather planner is worth a look before you fix your dates.
Treating Rawdah as a walk-in visit
Visiting the Rawdah in the Prophet's Mosque needs its own Nusuk permit, separate from the Umrah permit. Plenty of pilgrims land in Madinah, open the app, and find every slot taken. Appointments usually open seven to fourteen days ahead, narrowing to three or five days in Ramadan and peak seasons, and they disappear within minutes of release.
Open the app daily from about ten days before you travel and take the first workable slot even if the timing is not ideal. The permit is tied to the named person and a fixed time, so it cannot be transferred or shifted. Booking frequency rules have changed more than once in recent years, so trust what the app shows you at the time rather than an old forum thread.
Logistical slips in the first two days
- Booking the train late: Haramain seats between Makkah and Madinah sell out weeks ahead in peak periods. Watch out for the difference between Jeddah Sulaimaniyah station and the King Abdulaziz Airport station, which are two separate places. Details are in our Haramain train guide.
- Relying on a dying phone: permits, tickets and entry codes are all QR codes on your screen. Carry a power bank and save screenshots, because signal weakens in crowds.
- Overpacking: this is a short trip with simple clothing in a hot climate. An extra suitcase is a burden in stations, lifts and small hotel rooms.
- Judging hotels by metres: a hotel 400 metres from the Haram can take twenty minutes on foot at peak times because of gates and pedestrian routing. Ask about walking time, not distance.
- Not recording your hotel details: photograph the address in Arabic and note the nearest Haram gate. The gates are numerous and the entrances look alike, and people lost after fajr are a nightly sight.
Two things to do before you book
If you take only two actions from this article, make them these: check your vaccination date today, before you buy the ticket, and open Nusuk ten days before departure for both the Umrah and Rawdah permits. Those two habits remove more than half of what first-time pilgrims end up complaining about.
If you would rather we handled the permits, hotels and the Makkah to Madinah transfer as one arranged programme, start at our trip planner or browse the Umrah hub for the rest of our guides.
